Ethics (Loyalty and Betrayal)

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 4 months ago

Thisis the notes page for Ethics (Loyalty and Betrayal). To get to the paper, click here: Ethics Paper

  •  I THINK WE SHOULD SWITCH GRANDPA AND GAIL. I FEEL THAT GAIL IS MORE LOYAL THEN GRANDPA. BUT IT IS JUST A SUGGESTION.  I think you are right. The way we have it worded makes her more loyal that Grandfather.
  • Uncle Frank betrays his family/Indian reservation by taking advantage of sick women and killing Marie
  • Wesley Hayden now has to investigate these accusations
  • the grandpa sees the arrest of Frank as a betrayal from Wesley
  • The grandfather puts his family first or in this case Frank and because of this will do anything to help him.
  • Dave is loyal to Marie and his family by letting them know what he saw
  • David is also confused on where everyone else's loyalties lie.
  • Wesley is betraying the law because he didn't put Frank in prison
  • Gail was loyal to Wes's decision about keeping Frank in the basement. When Wes's dad sent those guys over to their house to get Frank she got the shot gun.

*Page 140: "At that moment, with those thoughts of betrayal and loyalty running through my brain, my father came around the side of the house." this quote talks about how Dave's mother ran and embraced Len when he scared away the 4 men trying to get Frank out of the basement. Then his mother said "david" as if she were asking him to step over and become part of a new family.

*Wesley was going to let Uncle Frank out of the basement because keeping him in the basement without conviction was against the law

*Page 156: "David, I believe that in this world people must pay for their crimes. It doesn't matter who you are or who your relations are; if you do wrong, you pay. I believe that. I have to." Finally at the end of the novel Wesley knows what he has to do about his brother, even if he lets his family down. Wesley always believed what he just told David, but he was scared of his father and got caught in the middle of his loyalty to the law and to his family.

  • Gail (dave's mother) betrays Wesley by being so close to Len
  • Wesley betrays Gail by not letting Frank out of the basement after he attained a confession from him
  • Gail doesn't stick to her first instinct about making Frank pay for what he had done to Marie. She is turning her back on what she feels is right, so she can protect her family.
  • grandpa will do anything he can to get frank out of the basement. He is loyal beliefs and frank
  • some people think that wes betrays brother by telling his secret
  • ollie young bear married white and other native americans may think that he betrayed his people

How should we organize our paper? We could talk about how the ethics of the characters affects the outcome of the novel. And then we could divide the paragraphs into either the beginning, middle, and end of the story, to show how the characters change their ethics throughout the novel and how it affects the outcome. Or maybe we could divide the paragraphs into the diffierent characters and talk about who they are loyal to and who they aren't.

Okay I think we have some really great ideas. I will start writing the paper and you girls can feel free to edit/add as you find necessary. Also Miss Boeser had a fabulous idea of organizing the paper to who is most loyal to least loyal. I will try to outline this but you can change it and add more. We need outside resources and more quotes too. Also, we should keep it in the same tense. I used past, but if you guys like present better we can change it.

Does someone want to finish the paper and write the conclusion? I really can't because I won't be at home tonight (Monday).

Also, I like this quote. "Unless you can find some sort of loyalty, you cannot find unity and peace in your active living." -Josiah Royce

I. Most loyal

A) David

1. Tells on Frank to his parents

2. doesn't know where other peoples loyalties are

3. Pg. 140 quote

B) Grandpa

1. will do anything he can to help Frank

II. Sort of loyal

A) Gail

1. kept the 4 men out

2. Close relationship with len

3. does not stick to her first instinct

B) Wes

1. Arrested frank/ didnt put him in prison

2. betrays gail by not letting frank out

3. makes grandpa angry

4. Pg. 156 quote

III. Not Loyal

A) Frank

1. takes advantage of patients

2. kills marie/ himself

B) Relationship of Gpa and WEs

1. Wes arrested frank and kept him in basement upsetting Grandpa

2. Grandpa sends armed men to get frank

3.grandpa does not want people to know about the drama of the hayden family

I really like that set up. So should we just do our paper like that and then if we think of something we can add it. Do we have to find stuff online? Or is everything just from the book?

She said to have a strong paper, we should have outside sources.

"From the summer of my twelfth year I carry a series of images more vivid and lasting then any others of my boyhood and indelible beyond all attempts the years make to erase or fade them..." (Watson 11)  The novel Montana 1948, by Larry Watson, follows the events that takes place in the summer of 1948, that is seen through a twelve year old boy's eyes.  The boy, David, wasn't truly able to grasp what had taken place that summer, but he did see how the murder of Marie affected  the ethics of his family and the town.  The characters in the novel face many trials, that ultimately test their loyalty.

^^^Is this the intro? I like it.
