Age (Generations)

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 5 months ago

These are the notes for Age (Generations). For our paper click here: Age Paper

The Main Characters...

David Hayden: age 12 he lives like any normal child in the 1940s. He looks up to his Uncle a lot in the begining. His family has a history of law inforcement and he doesnt know if he wants to do that when he's older. He admires Marie and is really sad when she dies. David doesnt really show his feelings and doesnt have control over what is going on. He keeps it all inside.

Wes Hayden: age 38. He is the town sheriff. He struggles a lot in the book with having to arrest his own brother. When people are argueing he likes to be the mediator. He brings something else up or suggests a family vacation or painting a house. He was going to be a lawyer but wanted to follow in his fathers footsteps. He is jealous of his brother (secretly) He doesn't take after his father in the sense that, he doesn't hate Indians as much as his father does.

Gail Hayden: age- mid thirties. She was a Lutheran from North Dakota. She works in the court house as a secretary. In the book she takes care of Marie a lot. She was the first to find out about how Frank was a molester. She fights for Marie and wants Frank to be put to justice. She cares so much about her family and she kind of isolates David from knowing whats going on in the family.

Frank Hayden: age-early fourties. He was a war hero and was a role model to many people in the town. He was also the town doctor. He was a very charming and caring person. He "cared for" many Indian women, including Marie. Later he is convicted of raping his patients.

Gloria Hayden: age late thirties early fourties. She was Franks wife. She is from Minnesota. She is very pretty and caring. She took care of David when he was sick and his parents were out of town. She had no idea of the acts her husband has commited.

Julian Hayden(Grandfather): age mid 60s-early 70s. He was the Mercer County sheriff prior to his son Wesley. He is very stubborn and always gets his way. He is powerful and rich. He favors his oldest son Frank and always talks about how geat he is. He hates Indians very much. He's thinks they're all rotten people.

Marie Little Soldier: early twenties. She is a Native American that is a housekeeper for Wes and Gail Hayden. She takes care of David and they become very close. She is really outgoing and the family really likes her. She gets pnemonia early in the story and when they call Frank to come over she freaks out. Gail finds out that she was raped by him and later she was murdered by him.

Each generation has their own viewpoint on Indians. The earlier generation of the people Julian Hayden's age dont like Indians at all. But the younger the generation, the more they seem to like Indians. There is a huge age gap between Julian and David, thus resulting in a difference of opinions on Indians. Wesley doesn't really like Indians, but he can at least tolerate them, while David likes them and actuallly becomes friends with them.

Hey yeah I completly agree with what your saying. I think that we should talk about that and put it in our paper. look at the link above that I set up it should help us figure it out. But we should really get started on the paper! let me know what you think! -Megan

Hi, I'm sorry I haven't been doing much. I feel bad about it, actually.

Anyways, within the generation thing, I'd like to point out that that holds true with almost everything.

Like homosexuality, if you notice the younger the people get as you talk to them about it, the more tolerant they are to it, the younger the people that are gay, the more willing to be open about they are.

Same with tattoos, clothing, and most everything that may have been frowned upon in the past.

So generationally, i see a trend that becomes more accepting as time goes on.

So, I suppose i'm not exactly sure what i'm doing but i'll be trying to help out with this more.

So, tell me what to do and i'll do it.

Feel free to delete this!

-Laura

hey! yeah its all good! no worries and yeah i agree with what your saying. I think that we should all decide or assign paragraphs for each of us to write so not only one person does it ya know? and it would probably a lot easier. just let me know what you think!

Hi! Ok just for the sake of getting things done, I'll do body paragraph 1. I'll write about the grandpa's attitude toward Native Americans and how that affects the end of the book. You guys can decide what paragraph you want to do. I don't know when we should try to have this done by. Maybe like sunday evening, and then I can write the intro paragraph if someone wants to write the conclusion. We can have Miss Boeser look at it before we turn it in to make sure everything is ok. Sound good? Have a good weekend!

Natalie : )
